Since May 2019, the Board of Trustees of the Winthrop Foundation has granted over $766,000 to bolster local nonprofits and initiatives -- spanning from food pantries, youth mental health programs, public health support, to urban canopy/tree plantings, extracurricular school programs, trades scholarships, farmers' market, parks and recreation enhancements, and more. Below are the grants awarded and the groups that received them.

WINTHROP DEPT OF PUBLIC HEALTH
Awarded $5,000 to the Winthrop DPH to support its 2025 Community Health Forum, which showcases the town's public health accomplishments and activites over the past year, and offers a wide variety of health services to our town.
NORTH SHORE PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA
Awarded $10,000 to this nonprofit organization, to sponsor a classical concert in September 2025, co-sponsor by Town Council President Jim Letterie and State Representative Jeffrey Turco. Attended by hundreds of residents, the concert offered attendees an aural display of the areas finest local musicians and an evening of gorgeous music for all to enjoy.
WINTHROP CHAMBER OF COMMERCE - 2025 ANNUAL HOLIDAY TREE LIGHTING
Awarded $15,000 to the local Chamber of Commerce, for the November 2025 Annual Holiday Tree Lighting. The Winthrop Foundation was once again the primary sponsor of the town's signature tree lighting event. Always a wonderful time for family and community gathering, the annual tree lighting brings together hundreds of residents of all ages to the town's center, and showcases the wares of local establishments, festive carolers, stage performers, activities for kids, delicious food, give-aways, and of course, Santa Claus!
WINTHROP FARMERS MARKET
Awarded $4,999 to this nonprofit organization, to support family--friendly enrichment activities and entertainment at the weeklly Sunday Farmers Market that foster community engagement, support local artists, and promote food education -- including live music, children’s entertainment, and interactive food demonstrations to create a welcoming atmosphere and attracts more visitors, supports local vendors, and strengthens community connections.
WINTHROP BUSINESS LEADERSHIP COUNCIL
Awarded $5,000 to this emerging nonprofit organization, in support of its June 2025 "I Heart Winthrop" community event, organized to boost awareness and support of our local business establishments.
DEPT OF PARKS & RECREATION & ATHLETIC DEPT.
Awarded $81,500 to two Town departments to renovate the existing junior varsity field into a multi-use field to maximize use of the field throughout the spring, summer and fall. The multi-use field will primarily be used by the WHS girls softball programs, with other uses for Little League and the Winthrop softball and baseball programs.
WHS ROBOTICS TEAM
Awarded $3,000 to the Winthrop High School Robotics Team to cover fees and materials to compete in the May 2025 Botball Robotics competition. The Robocis Club and participation in this annual competition gives high school students opportunities to gain exposure in the fast-emerging field of robotics and artificial intelligence.
TRADES SCHOLARSHIPS - NORTHEAST METROPOLITAN REGIONAL VOCATIONAL SCHOOL (THE VOKE)
Awarded $6,000 to Northeast Metropolitan Regional Vocational School (The Voke), to three 2025 graduating seniors who will go into the trades. Each student receives $2,000 to support their continued schooling and careers. Funds help the recipients cover the expenses of furthering their education and costs related to pursuing a career in the trades.
TRADES SCHOLARSHIPS - WINTHROP HIGH SCHOOL
Awarded $6,000 to the Winthrop High School for three 2025 graduating seniors who will go into the trades. Each student receives $2,000 as they continue their schooling and begin their careers. Funds help the recipients cover the expense of furthering their education and costs related to pursuing a career in the trades.
WINTHROP CHAMBER OF COMMERCE - 2023 and 2024 ANNUAL HOLIDAY TREE LIGHTING
Awarded a $13,500 grant in 2023 and again in 2024, to support the Chamber's Annual Holiday Tree Lighting. The Trustees of the Winthrop Foundation are thrilled to see that the Chamber is continuing this flagship community event to enrich and enchant the families of our town. The Trustees are dedicated to ensuring that the Chamber continues to take the lead in organizing this beloved tradition, which brings our community together during the holiday season, as one of the most outstanding and successful community events each year.
WHS SPORTS PROGRAMS
Awarded $24,300 to Winthrop High School to purchase HUDL hardware and software which allows the town's school sports programs to live-stream games at the WHS gym and the Miller field press box, and includes a portable camera to film and stream events at Larsen rink and the baseball and softball fields.
WINTHROP DEPT OF PUBLIC HEALTH
Awarded $5,000 to sponsor the 2024 annual Community Health Forum, a community event initiated by former Speaker of the House Robert DeLeo. Each year, the Community Health Forum offers the town of Winthrop an enriching program that benefits hundreds of community members.
RISE & SHINE INFANT DROP-IN PROGRAM - FOR KIDS ONLY
Awarded a $15,000 seed-grant to help support the Rise & Shine infant drop-in program offered by For Kids Only. Foundation funding provides initial support for the program as it seeks to become self-funding and a permanent offering of FKO in the years to come.
WHS CLASS OF 2025
Awarded $1,500 to support the WHS Class of 2025's year-end celebratory events for graduating seniors.
DEPT OF PARKS & RECREATION & ATHLETIC DEPT.
Awarded $7,800 to provide funds for field improvements to the Ft Banks sports field.
WINTHROP LITTLE LEAGUE
Awarded $35,000 to Winthrop Little League, as part of their large field dug-out and scoreboard replacement project.
THE 11 FOUNDATION FOR WINTHROP YOUTH FOOTBALL
Awarded $25,000 to replenish aged-out helmets, shoulder pads, footballs and practice jerseys, for the safety of the players in the Winthrop Youth Football program.
TRADES SCHOLARSHIPS TO WINTHROP HIGH SCHOOL & THE NORTHEAST METROPOLITAN VOCATIONAL REGIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
In 2022, the Foundation awarded WHS with two $1,500 scholarships that went to two graduating seniors going into careers in the trades.
In 2024, the Winthrop Foundation awarded three $1,500 scholarships for WHS graduating seniors going into the trades, and three $1,500 scholarships to Winthrop seniors attending the Voke (Northeast Vocational Regional High School) who plan to enter into the trades.
WINTHROP DEPT OF PUBLIC HEALTH
Awarded $5,000 to the DPH to support its annual Community Health Forum, for the benefit of all in the community.
FRIENDS OF THE WINTHROP PUBLIC LIBRARY
Awarded $1,500 to Friends of the Winthrop Public Library in celebration of the library's 125th Anniversary. Funding supplemented the activities planned by this volunteer-led group.
WINTHROP COUNCIL ON AGING (ROBERT DELEO SENIOR CENTER)
Awarded $5,000 to the Winthrop Council on Aging to provide additional free transportation to and from various locations throughout the town for Winthrop senior citizens..
WINTHROP YOUTH HOCKEY ASSOCIATION
Awarded $13,240 to this 501c3, to fund a 12-week intensive hockey skill-building program intended to improve the skills of young skaters while having no impact on the cost to their families.
WINTHROP HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL
Awarded $10,000 for the renovation of Veteran's baseball field, including a complete renovation of the infield which fixed concerning areas such as growing weed, lips around the infield, improper clay, and worn out sod.
DEPT OF PARKS & RECREATION
Awarded $20,500 to renovate a portion of the tennis courts at Ingleside Park into Pickleball Courts for all residents of the town to use.
WINTHROP YOUTH CHEER
Awarded $12,416 of funding to replace the worn-out youth cheer mats for the safety of the town's young cheer leaders. .
THE 11 FOUNDATION FOR THE HOLIDAY TREE LIGHTING VOLUNTEERS
Awarded $10,000 to a group of all-vollunteer community members to cover the expenses associated with the annual tree lighting including the lights and installation contractor, vendors, PA, insurance, and other contracted services for the annual November 2022 Holiday Tree Lighting.
TREE WINTHROP / GROW (previously Winthrop Loves Trees)
Awarded this local nonprofit organization a $70,400 grant to purchase and plant trees and pollinator gardens to enhance the urban canopy and green spaces within the town. The funds were utilized to purchase over 100 trees, tree bags, implement the Adopt-a-Tree volunteer initiative, establish pollinator gardens, and contract to conduct an inventory of trees situated on the town's public lands. The project began in September 2022 and was completed in the spring of 2024, enriching the town with both aesthetic appeal and valuable environmental benefits.
WHS ROBOTICS TEAM
WHS Robotics Team received a $5,000 grant to design and build a robot for the upcoming 2022-2023 FIRST Robotics Competition. This student-led club and the competition focused on production, programming, and testing of student-built robots. Grant funds covered expenses for robot components and fees for competition registration. The experience gave WHS students opportunities to engage in manufacturing, engineering, and coding while creating innovative features and designs for their robot. This project also served as a platform to introduce students and parents to the exciting world of engineering.
WHS SAILING PROGRAM
Awarded $22,956 to the WHS Sailing Program to support the public high school's need for new sailboats, sailboat racks, and a trailer to enhance competitiveness with other schools and sailing clubs.
DEPT OF PARKS & RECREATION
Awarded $15,000 to the Dept of Parks & Rec in order to provide funding for the purchase and installation of improved, safe and code-compliant playground equipment, include a new slide, at the Crest Avenue playground.
WINTHROP LITTLE LEAGUE
Awarded $10,000 to the Winthrop Little League to make a number of renovations and repairs including re-sodding and leveling of the infield, making improvements to the mound, thatching and renovating the warning track, and repairing the sprinkler system.
POINT SHIRLEY ASSOCIATION
Awarded $8,000 to the Point Shirley Association to make small capital repairs to the PSA building.
TOWN OF WINTHROP DOG PARK
Awarded the Town of Winthrop a $100,000 grant to bolster the town's own contribution of funds to develop and construct a dog park, a long-anticipated project. The work reached a significant milestone with a groundbreaking and completion in September 2022. Located on Veterans Rd along the southeastern edge of Miller Field, the Winthrop Dog Park offers a space for all residents -- humans and canines -- to relish.
WINTHROP HIGH SCHOOL
Awarded $2,500 to WHS to fund a December 2022 mental health and wellness presentation to the WHS student body.
TOWN OF WINTHROP EMERGENCY FUNDING
Awarded $42,000 to the Town to provide one-time support for victim assistance and temporary housing for many Winthrop residents who were victims displaced from their homes due to a major fire on Veterans Road in April 2023.
WINTHROP LITTLE LEAGUE
Awarded $25,000 to the Little League to construct new batting cages, netting, fencing and groundwork, including installation and labor
WINTHROP PARENT-TEACHER ORGANIZATION
Awarded $1,500 to the PTO for "Hope for the Holidays" gifts cards which were provided to needy Winthrop families during the winter holidays to purchase not only essentials and groceries, but holiday items of hope.
WINTHROP DPH "HOMETOWN HEROES"
A special award of $2,000 was given by the Trustees of the Winthrop Foundation in recognition of the above-and-beyond work done by the Winthrop DPH, its director Meredith Hurley, and her team of volunteer nurses and health professionals. They worked tirelessly to keep all of the town's residents as safe as possible during the most difficult days of the COVID-19 pandemic.
POLICE EXPLORERS - TOYS FOR TOTS
Awarded $1,000 to the Police Explorers "Toys for Tots" holiday gift giving, for families in need.
CASA: COMMUNITY ACTION FOR SAFE ALTERNATIVES
Awarded $10,000 in emergency-response funds during the start of the COVID-19 pandemic to increase outreach to youth who needed mental health support. CASA's is committed to improving the quality of life for all Winthrop residents and providing a safe community for children and youth by identifying and providing prevention resources, educating individuals about the effects of substance abuse as a complex issue, and assisting them in creating healthier environments.
WINTHROP PUBLIC LIBRARY
Awarded $3,500 during the onset of COVID-19 for the Winthrop Public Library to purchase software, allowing them to maintain virtual public programming in lieu of the library's closure.
MI AMORE
Awarded $10,000 at the onset of COVID-19 to help this local nonprofit organization expand emergency food resources for vulnerable Winthrop residents, and awarded $1,000 during COVID-19 for emergency shelter for needy residents. Mi-Amore is a veteran led, nonprofit that provides food resources to the town's elderly, single and struggling families, and those recovering from addiction. Mi-Amore collaborates with public school system, community leaders, and faith institutions of Winthrop to identify and support at-risk populations, with an all-volunteer community and Board that delivers meals, fresh fruit, vegetables and bread to support residents in need.
FOR KIDS ONLY
Awarded $10,000 to support For Kids Only as it modified its Winthrop operations and activities per the state's Covid-19 re-opening guidelines and provide full-day summer programming for 75 Winthrop children. FKO-Winthrop is a nonprofit offering school-age youth out-of-school time enrichment and social-emotional learning opportunities that help them learn, grow and thrive.
COTTAGE PARK YACHT CLUB
Awarded a $5,000 grant to boost the promotion of the 2021 Snipe International Racing Association's Western Hemisphere and Orient Championship Regatta, offering the Town of Winthrop a platform to shine. The grant supported race management, event celebrations, media center arrangements, hospitality, and costs linked to international participants and officials.
POINT SHIRLEY ASSOCIATION
Awarded $3,600 to support the Town's emergency staging services and PSA's revenue loss at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
WINTHROP HIGH SCHOOL
Awarded $2,500 to the 2020 WHS graduating seniors in support of alternative graduation events in light of COVID-19 preventing an in-person ceremony.
WINTHROP MIDDLE SCHOOL
Awarded $3,800 to subsidize books for students at the Winthrop Middle School during COVID-19, to enhance summer reading and future summer programs.
COVID-19 EMERGENCY SUPPORT FOR SMALL BUSINESSES
To support dozens of small businesses in Winthrop at the start of the COVID-19 crisis, in the early months of 2020. Many local establishments were at risk of closing their doors. Trustees of Winthrop Foundation provided funds to purchase $750 vouchers (gift certificates) from over 25 local establishments. The vouchers were purchased by the Foundation, then distributed by a local nonprofit to families and individuals in need. These families then used the vouchers at the local establishments, purchasing groceries, prepared foods, and other essentials.
